Where are your concert venues?Dalhousie Arts Centre

Most of our concerts happen at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium, on the campus of Dalhousie University in Halifax.

The Rebecca Cohn is part of the Dalhousie Arts Centre at 6101 University Avenue, Halifax, Nova Scotia. For a map, click here.

We perform our Baroque concerts at the historic St. Andrew's United Church in downtown Halifax. St. Andrews United Church is on the corner of Robie Street and Coburg Road.

Where can I park?

If your concert is in the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium, you'll find parking on the street outside the auditorium or in Dalhousie University parking lots throughout the campus after 7 pm. There are also two parkades available – one is located between Seymour and Henry Streets, while the other is in the basement of Dalhousie’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences building on Seymour Street. Both parkades have "pay and park" dispensers.

If your concert is at St. Andrews United Church, you'll find parking on the streets around the church.

When should I get there?

We do our best to start our concerts on time, so we recommend giving yourself a few extra minutes before the posted start time to find parking, pick up your tickets, and grab your seat.

What if I’m late?

If you end up being late (hey, things happen!) our ushers will show you to your seat during the next break in the concert program.

What if I can’t make it?

If you can't attend your concert after all, just give our box office a call at 494.3820 or 1.800.874.1669. We'll be happy to exchange your tickets for another Symphony Nova Scotia concert of your choice.

To make this process easier for everyone, we recommend leaving your purchased tickets on file at the box office. That way, you'll still be able to pick them up before your concert -- but if something comes up, you don't have to deal with the extra step of returning them.

Please note that we do ask for 24 hours’ notice to exchange your tickets. If you’re unable to provide 24 hours’ notice, we’d be happy to exchange your tickets for a tax receipt of equal value. Tax receipts are processed through our administrative office at 902.421.1300, ext. 231.

What if I lose my tickets?

If you lose your tickets, just contact our box office at 1.800.874.1669 or 494.3820. We'll be happy to replace your tickets with a lost ticket voucher.

How long is a typical performance?

Most of our concerts are between two and two-and-a-half hours long (including one 20-minute intermission). If you want to find out how long a specific performance will be (or what music we'll be playing when), just give us a call at 902.421.1300.

What should I wear?

Whatever you want! Some people like to dress up for our concerts, but plenty of others wear jeans and t-shirts. We don't care what you wear -- we just want you to show up and have fun!

If you're really worried about blending in, we can tell you that most people dress very casually for our pop and Maritime concerts. For classical concerts, you'll see fewer jeans and more business casual. And for concerts like the Nutcracker, you'll see everything from sparkly dresses (especially the kids!) to sweats.

What about perfume and cologne?

Since several of our patrons have severe scent allergies, we ask that you please leave the cologne, perfume, hairspray, and deodorant at home!

Are there any services for people with disabilities?

If you're in need of special assistance or seating, please give us a call at 902.494.3820 or 1.800.874.1669. We'll give you information on seating options and answer any other questions you may have.

Parking for people with disabilities is available on Seymour Street between University Avenue and Coburg Road. Wheelchairs can enter the Dalhousie Arts Centre on the ramp at the front of the building.

The Rebecca Cohn Auditorium offers limited seating for wheelchairs and elevator access, as well as a wireless, portable sound enhancement system for anyone with hearing impairment.

Can I bring my kids?

You’re welcome to bring any children old enough to enjoy the performance. We do ask that you avoid bringing babes-in-arms, and that you make sure your kids are seated next to you. All children must have a ticket.

Performances that children are sure to enjoy this season are Spooky Chills and Musical Thrills! and The Nutcracker.

For more information about kid-friendly shows, contact us at 902.421.1300.

Will there be refreshments?

Beverage and candy cart service is available in the Dalhousie Arts Centre lobby prior to concerts and during intermission. Please note that no food or drink is allowed in the auditorium.

When do I clap?

Although our musicians don’t object to applause at any time, most audiences wait until the end of an entire piece to clap. If you’re not sure when a piece ends, just check your program. Beneath the name of each piece, it will list the piece’s movements, or sections. The audience usually waits until the last movement is over to clap.

If you’re still not sure, you can keep an eye on the conductor – when the piece is over, he will put his arms down and turn to the audience. Or, you can just wait until the clapping begins and then join in!

What if I have to cough?

If you have a cold, please bring some cough drops and water with you to help you avoid coughing during the performance. But if you begin to cough a lot, it’s acceptable and appropriate to quietly exit the auditorium. The ushers will seat you during the next pause in the performance.

Can I take photos?

Since cameras and other recording devices can be distracting for musicians, please do not take photos during the performance. If you’d like a photo of a performer, contact us at 902.421.1300.

Can I bring my cell phone?

If you bring your cell phone or pager, be sure to turn it off before the performance begins.
