Senior Manager, Education and Community Engagement

The Senior Manager, Education and Community Engagement is a key member of a collaborative team dedicated to community connection and partnerships, inclusivity, relationship building, and developing the artform. This position: 

  • develops and implements community engagement and educational programming that provides accessible and meaningful ways for the broader community to engage with music
  • oversees Symphony Nova Scotia’s youth orchestra operations and engages in strategy development, planning, and priority-setting to deliver the best possible music training 
  • sets objectives and overall direction for community engagement programs, evaluates and tracks results closely, and ensures alignment with broader organizational goals 
  • establishes and manages strong, positive, inclusive, and respectful relationships with a broad range of community partners 
  • oversees two direct reports. 

Key programming responsibilities include:  

  • building music awareness and appreciation in diverse audiences of all ages 
  • enhancing music skills, personal development, access, and music appreciation aimed at young audiences and musicians 
  • building diverse, strategic, and meaningful community relationships 
  • reaching underserved communities with respect, cultural sensitivity, and authenticity 
  • building community connection, wellness, and belonging through accessible and enriching activities 
  • enhancing and expanding the artform through engaging diverse artists and creative approaches.  

This position reports to the CEO and works closely and collaboratively with the Senior Director of Artistic Planning, the Director of Marketing and Communications, and the Director of Development to ensure alignment with broader programming, audience development, and funder goals.

About You  

You are a strong communicator, creative thinker, problem solver, and relationship builder.  You have excellent interpersonal skills and maintain effective and respectful working relationships with ease. You are a confident communicator, able to deliver public programming, communicate effectively with youth orchestra and professional musicians, and develop relationships with a wide range of community partners.  

You have strong music knowledge and proven experience with developing and implementing arts/music programming. You have demonstrated skills working with youth in an education setting with positive, wellness-driven approaches. You have demonstrated experience and aptitude working with diverse communities and uphold the highest standards of inclusivity, respect, and accessibility.  

You are self-directed but also work well with a team of creative colleagues. You are organized, adaptable, and approach your work with a project management mindset. 

You have: 

  • a degree in Music, Music Education, or equivalent 
  • a valid driver’s license and good driving record 
  • experience with Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint) 

Knowledge of classical music is considered to be a very strong asset.

This position works in a mobile and dynamic work environment, including in-office, at venue, and remote work, and has irregular work hours including early mornings, evenings and weekends.

Salary and benefits 

$60,000 to $65,000/year; eligible for a comprehensive health plan; full-time, permanent position.
