Ellis Yuen-Rapati
Acting Assistant PrincipalEllis Yuen-Rapati is a prominent Canadian violist hailing from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Ellis is one of the newest members of Symphony Nova Scotia and brings his experiences from having performed with leading Canadian orchestras including the National Arts Centre Orchestra, London Symphonia, and Thunder Bay Symphony.
His performance career extends from Canadian stages to notable international venues, including the Konzerthaus in Berlin, the Belém Cultural Center in Lisbon Portugal, and Usher Hall in Edinburgh. He has also been featured at the Scotia Festival of Music, Festival of the Sound, and Festival de musique de chambre du lac Baker. His awards include McGill University’s Lloyd Carr-Harris String Fellowship, The Royal Conservatory of Music’s Eileen Watson Memorial Bursary, and the Hazel Workman Kettle Scholarship and London Symphonia Fellowship at Western University. Ellis toured several summers with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada where he had the opportunity to play principal, and he has worked with conductors including Bramwell Tovey, Michael Francis, and Gabor Takacs-Nagy.
Ellis began his musical journey on the violin at age four under Yvonne DeRoller and cultivated his passion for orchestral music in the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts junior orchestra with Pat Wyman. His major teachers have been André Roy, Steven Dann, and Sharon Wei. Ellis is delighted to be performing with his hometown orchestra. He enjoys taking walks in Shubie Park and watching movies in his spare time.
