Maris Hughes

Associate Director of Development, Partnerships and Events

Growing up in a VERY small town in Ontario, I was never really introduced to classical and orchestral music in my early years. It wasn’t until I got to high school that I really had the opportunity to discover my passion for it. I started playing saxophone in grade 9 and loved it so much that I wanted to take it to the next level.

Like a few others here at Symphony Nova Scotia, I also went to Mount Allison University (we like to stick together). I completed a Bachelor of Music with a focus in saxophone performance. I knew early on in my degree that my biggest passion in the arts was the ability to work behind-the-scenes. Following my degree, I moved to Halifax to study Public Relations. I wanted to do whatever it took to help promote the arts in our country. I was fortunate enough to start my career in my field immediately following school. I worked with a few different arts organizations in Ottawa. I always knew someday I’d be back in the Maritimes and here I am! I am so thrilled to be working with the entire team at Symphony Nova Scotia and really looking forward to getting my hands dirty!

Q&A with Maris

Why did you begin working with Symphony Nova Scotia?
It was a natural step for me in my career, but ultimately I believe in the power of music and what it can do for the lives of others and I believe that Symphony Nova Scotia really excels in spreading the love of music across the province. I am proud to work for such a great organization and look forward to what the future has to bring.

What do you love about symphonic music?
My favourite thing about symphonic music is the ability for hundreds of instruments (and their respective players) to come together to make one incredible sound. It is the ultimate success in team work!

Do you play an instrument?
Yes! I play the alto and tenor saxophone. I was a performance major at Mount Allison University and loved every minute of it. I have a personal goal to learn how to play the fiddle – any teachers out there?

What do you like to do in your spare time?
There are so many things I love to do in my spare time and it usually depends on the mood I’m in. Generally, I just like to be with family and friends and to enjoy the great outdoors!

What’s your favourite sports team?
My favourite sports team is definitely the Toronto Blue Jays!

I’m currently reading S.J. Watson’s Second Life. A fantastic read if you’re into a good thriller!
