Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto is a stunning showcase of his unique blend of classical tradition and modernist innovation. The four movements each have their own distinct character and mood, ranging from sombre and introspective to frenzied and virtuosic. The concerto’s emotional impact is undeniable, with its haunting melodies, complex harmonies, and thrilling climax. After his stunning Halifax performance in 2016, cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia – “an artist from whom sound and texture flow with ease and authenticity” (The Whole Note) and a BBC New Generation Artist in 2022 – returns to perform this daring concerto. Plus, hear Copland’s rich, radiant Appalachian Spring, “one of the most inspiring and symbolic works of the century” (NPR).
