Shostakovich’s first cello concerto is a stunning showcase of his unique blend of classical tradition and modernist innovation. The four movements each have their own distinct character and mood, ranging from sombre and introspective to frenzied and virtuosic. The concerto’s emotional impact is undeniable, with its haunting melodies, complex harmonies, and thrilling climax. After his stunning Halifax performance in 2019, cellist Stéphane Tétreault – an artist whose playing is “astonishingly mature not merely in its technical attributes but also in its warmth, brilliance and subtlety of colour and inflection” (Gramophone) – returns to perform this daring concerto. Plus, hear Copland’s rich, radiant Appalachian Spring, “one of the most inspiring and symbolic works of the century” (NPR).
