Don’t miss Symphony Nova Scotia’s season finale concerts: Broadway Legends, Symphony Soloists, & The East Pointers
Halifax/Kjipuktuk, NS – Symphony Nova Scotia’s final concerts of the 2024/25 season include a celebration of Broadway Legends, spectacular solo performances from our very own musicians, our sold-out Spotlight finale concert with pianist Serhiy Salov, and our first-ever collaboration with PEI’s JUNO Award-winning folk group The East Pointers.
BROADWAY LEGENDS – APRIL 4, 5, & 6
Our 2024/25 Symphonic Fusion Series concludes with Broadway Legends – featuring Broadway mega hits and star vocalists, audiences will enjoy the best of Broadway through the enduring songs of legendary composers like Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Relive your favourite onstage moments with music from Wicked, The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Evita, West Side Story, and much more. Alli Mauzey has starred in several Broadway productions, including playing Glinda from Wicked, and Hugh Panaro is best known for having played the coveted role of the Phantom in Broadway’s The Phantom of the Opera over 2,000 times, including the 25th anniversary production. Plus, hear music from Mi’kmaw artist, musician, and composer Cathy Elliott from her musical Fireweeds: Women of the Yukon.
SYMPHONY SOLOISTS PLAY MOZART – APRIL 10
Experience the extraordinary talent of our very own musicians in this lively concert of orchestral showpieces! In Holly Mathieson’s penultimate concert as Music Director, she leads the orchestra in a performance of one of Mozart’s greatest youthful compositions. Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante – with its bright, vivid colours – showcases the exceptional musicianship of our Principal Oboe Danielle Johannes, Principal Clarinet Timothy Yung, Principal Bassoon Gabe Azzie, and our newest member, Principal Horn Carys Sutherland, who was named one of CBC’s Classical 30 Under 30 in 2024. Plus, Concertmaster Renaud Lapierre displays his crystalline technique on his prized 19th-century Parisian Vuillaume violin – graciously provided by Canimex Inc. from Drummondville, Québec – in his performance of Pēteris Vasks’ achingly beautiful violin concerto, Distant Light. We’re also delighted to welcome assistant conductor Kelly Lin who appears courtesy of Tapestry Opera’s Women in Musical Leadership Program.
For those who want to watch from the comfort of home, this concert will be livestreamed for just $19 (HST included). The concert will also be repeated in Wolfville. Please note: tickets for the Wolfville concert are sold directly through the venue and are not available at the Dalhousie Arts Centre Box Office. See details below.
TCHAIKOVSKY & RACHMANINIOFF – MAY 1 (SOLD OUT)
Our Spotlight Series concludes with a sold-out concert highlighting works by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. Piano Concerto No. 2 established Sergei Rachmaninoff as a renowned concerto composer. Written as a tribute to the neurologist he credited for curing his depression and writer’s block, the concerto is profoundly uplifting and highlights the healing power of music. Serhiy Salov is an award-winning Canadian pianist born in Ukraine, and he joins Symphony Nova Scotia to perform this popular concerto. Known for his remarkable technique, exacting rigour, and virtuosity – qualities that unwaveringly serve the poetry inherent in the music – he’s received public enthusiasm, critical acclaim, and prominent status on the international music scene as both a soloist and chamber musician. We also perform Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony – a mighty, emotional powerhouse that blends soaring melodies, dark turmoil, and deep joy in its explorations of life, loss, and fate. Assistant conductor Kelly Lin returns for this concert courtesy of Tapestry Opera’s Women in Musical Leadership Program.
THE EAST POINTERS – MAY 9 & 10
Finally, our Maritime Fusion Series concludes with JUNO Award-winning PEI folk band The East Pointers – musical trailblazers known for their energetic, eclectic blend of traditional Celtic music with modern folk, pop, and dance. The critically-acclaimed group took home three ECMAs in 2023 alone. Now, they make their orchestral debut with Symphony Nova Scotia in an innovative fusion of rich vocal harmonies, furious energy, and groundbreaking orchestral arrangements of hits like Wintergreen, Stronger Than You Know, We Will Meet Again, Goolaholla, and more. Don’t miss this boundary-pushing, genre-redefining season-finale concert where the past and future of East Coast folk music collide in a grand symphonic celebration.
