Katya has loved music from a very early age. She was inspired to learn the violin from violinists in her church. Her first violin lessons were with Renee Doucet, a fiddler from Cape Breton who taught Katya how to play jigs and reels. In the summers, Katya used her talents to busk for the many tourists along the Halifax waterfront!
At the age of nine, Katya was introduced to classical music and music theory by Skippy Mardon. Skippy also encouraged Katya to enter into Kiwanis music festival competitions.
For the last three years, Katya has been studying the violin from Celeste Jankowski. Celeste has helped Katya develop her sight-reading skills and has encouraged Katya not just to perfect the technical aspects of a piece, but also musicality. In the last three Kiwanis festivals, Katya has placed in first three times and has placed in second three times.
Most recently, Katya played as Principal Second Violin in the chamber orchestra at the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts. Katya regularly shares her musical talents at church and in her school orchestra.
